Developed by Frasers Centrepoint Homes, St Thomas Suites was designed by internationally respected Japanese architect Masaki Miyake. Currently design associate for SAA Architects, Miyake has built his career on creating consummate, eye-catching architecture and St Thomas Suites is no exception. St Thomas’ distinctive curving forms rise above neighbouring buildings and can be seen from most vantage points in the city.
The St Thomas Suites towers comprise a total of 176 freehold residences – each crowned by a super-penthouse of more than 700m2 on the 33rd floor. Immediately below these, there are six two-level loft units, or mini-penthouses, in each tower – ranging from 316m2 to 434m2 in size. These were all taken up when the project first came on the market.
All apartments feature larger-than-usual interiors, in terms of both floor space and soaring three-metre ceiling heights. Three styles make up the majority of apartments – three bedroom, at 169m2; four bedroom units, at 187m2; and four bedroom plus study options at 242m2 in size.
Each level comprises one of each of these apartment types. Three pedestrian elevators, plus a service lift, in each tower mean the elevator doors open directly into a resident’s own entranceway, avoiding the need to use communal lobbies.
Set on an elevated 13,000m2 stretch of land at the quiet end of the prestigious St Thomas Walk, careful consideration has gone into the towers’ alignment on the site, to minimise afternoon sun and reflective glare. The orientation of the St Thomas towers, combined with a treated glass curtain wall and the use of sunshades, ensures all the residences are sheltered from direct sunlight through the day. A sheer curtain wall contributes to the stand-apart look of the towers, together with the wide-spanning balconies for each residence. The curtain wall, in conjunction with extensive glazing, allows residents to feel that the scenery is an uninterrupted extension of the open-plan interiors.
Views from all the residences are breath-taking, with St Thomas’ inner-city, elevated situation overlooking the hub of the city’s business and retail activity. However, nothing prepares you for the 360° views afforded from the two penthouses, 33 levels up. These have the added indulgence of their own lap pools.
Miyake’s design for St Thomas is an exercise in superior space planning generally. The airy, open-plan apartments are designed with hollow voids between residences, for example, and no direct interconnecting walls. The result is a whisper-quiet living environment for owners, and improved daylight and natural ventilation penetrates deep into the towers’ mass.
Even the approach to the towers offers something out of the ordinary. A sunken garden provides the arrival point for visitors and doesn’t detract from the landscaping.
Singapore’s catch phrase The City in the Garden has been applied at a residential scale to St Thomas Suites. The enclave presents a tropical, luxuriant welcome with a mature banyan tree creating a spectacular entry feature. A large waterfall, originating at podium level and connecting the two approach roundabouts for St Thomas Suites, adds to the dramatic welcome.
Both podium towers and their gardens share a large swimming pool formed by a series of sweeping arcs. The pool’s generous dimensions allow for 45m lap lengths – niche areas provide a children’s pool and a family swimming pool to relax in.
At the north end of the site, abutting the pool, there is a private clubhouse and recreation area offering everything from a gymnasium and tennis court to a spa pool, changing rooms, a steam bath and children’s play areas. Both the clubhouse and tennis court are surrounded by thematic plantings of bamboo, giving these facilities a specific planting character.
One thing St Thomas Suites has throughout is individual character. Set in the city’s heart, yet with a quiet, removed air created by its design and location, these residential towers offer something out of the ordinary for potential high-end apartment buyers. Spacious living, a handy location, and aesthetic impact all play their part.
